Stars Align for Maui Film Festival

Every summer, the Wailea destination of Maui becomes even hotter when filmmakers, celebrities and cinema fans flock to the Valley Isle for the Maui Film Festival. This year was no exception, especially as the festival celebrated its 10th year, held June 17-21, 2009.

Our own Mala Wailea restaurant hosted an exclusive VIP party Thursday evening, with owner Shep Gordon and chef Mark Ellman welcoming a “who’s who” of attendees, including actresses Zooey Deschanel and Virginia Madsen, country legend Willie Nelson, actor Richard Chamberlain and Death for Cab Musician Ben Gibbard.

Celebrating King Kamehameha Day

June 11th is a state holiday in Hawaii celebrating King Kamehameha the Great. King Kamehameha was born in the North Kohala district on Hawaii’s Big Island and at the age of 14, he was destined into greatness when he lifted the Naha Stone. This stone was only to be lifted by one man, the legendary warrior who would unite the Hawaiian Islands. King Kamehameha fulfilled his destiny some thirty years later in 1810 after successfully winning several battles on all the Hawaiian Islands and formally establishing the Kingdom of Hawaii.
