The Legend of Lava Rock

Esther, Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort & Spa

You may want to think twice before you pocket that souvenir lava rock or hand full of sand from Hawaii! Have you ever heard of the Legend of Lava Rock?

The legend has it that Pele, the goddess of fire and volcanoes, considers Hawaii’s land as her children. According to the legend, a horrible curse will be placed on those who decide to take home the rocks and sands, as well as the person’s family and friends until the items are returned.

The Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort & Spa receives approximately 30 lbs. of lava rock and sand in the mail per month. Often these rocks are accompanied by letters explaining their sudden turn of bad luck, begging for forgiveness and requesting a proper return back to Hawaii.

Some believe the myth of the lava rock curse cautioned by Volcano National park rangers was initiated to prevent visitors from taking rocks back home with them. Nevertheless, it is for you to decide -- is the chance of tragic bad luck worth a volcanic keepsake?
