At an early age, the simple and subtle forms and shapes that occur in Nature profoundly impacted me. My paintings have grown from these influences and from the continual exploration of how natural shapes relate to basic two-dimensional design theories. The compositions and images I create are distinctly connected to and influenced by the sea and the people that it breathes life into.
In an island community, there is a harmonious bond between the people and the sea. In the images I create, I try to capture a similar harmony in the marriage of shapes and colors. For many years I have worked with the simple shapes of circles and squares, from which emerged one of my favorite subjects – Fish.
My primary medium is acrylic, although I often incorporate mixed media using sheet metal, screws, nails, wires, casting plaster, water color paper, and plexi-glass. Each material incorporated is used to enhance or represent a circle or square. My creativity is continually fueled by the interesting challenge of finding and creating exciting, vibrant, and whimsical compositions from these simple shapes.
