The Search for Our “Biggest Loser,” The Healthy Way

By Christy, JW Marriott Ihilani Resort & Spa

Many people struggle to lose weight and live a healthier lifestyle, especially when you lead busy lives. So we turned to a popular television show as inspiration for a friendly weight loss competition among our associates. And as an added incentive, the two winners — one male associate and one female associate — will get a trip for two to Kauai!

Our version of the “Biggest Loser” contest started in March and will end this Friday. 65 associates signed up and received advice and tools to help them achieve their weight loss goals in a healthy manner. We are fortunate to have a spacious fitness center just for associates, stocked with good equipment, such as treadmills and weights. The fitness center is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, perfect for those of us who work long or odd hours. Having a great gym right in our own workplace is so convenient that there’s really no excuse not to take advantage of it!

For those who rather exercise outdoors, our hotel also offered weekly yoga sessions. Held every Thursday afternoon on the beautiful lagoon lawn, this was a great way to stretch out after a day of work!

Exercise isn’t the only important factor to losing weight. The hotel also provided nutrition workshops conducted by HMSA health educators who explained how to eat healthy with our favorite local foods.

Nancy Arcayna of the Honolulu Star-Advertiser visited JW Marriott Ihilani Resort & Spa recently to chat with our associates participating in our "Biggest Loser" contest. Click here to read the article.

As our contest wraps up this week, we’d like to commend everyone who participated and our General Manager Dan Banchiu and management team for supporting this effort. While there can only be one winner per category, we know that everyone is a winner just by changing their dietary and exercise habits. And we hope these brave associates will inspire others and their families and friends to be healthier!
