More Than a $5,000 Gift

Kelly, Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort & Spa

Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort & Spa associates continue their "Spirit to Serve" by creating unique ways to raise funds and collaborating to help Hawaii Island communities. Kelly Alonzo and Lanakila Graves often spearhead the resort's fundraising efforts, and this time is no exception! In February, the resort's associates donated $5,000 to Hawaii Island United Way CPO Darla DeVille. And in doing so, the teamwork and camaraderie instilled during the process is what made giving back even more worthwhile.

Associates raised funds and monitored progress with an aquarium bulletin board - a friendly department challenge. Each department was given a goal dollar amount based on the number of associates in their department. Associates could participate by donating money or conducting a department fundraiser.

Here are some great examples. The Security team sold Fat Boy ice cream sandwiches. Food and Beverage associates held a Chinese and Filipino food sale, which included assorted desserts. The Events and Banquet team held a 13x9 bake sale in which you could bake or make anything that would fit into a 13" x 9" baking pan. Housekeeping has a continuous "snack store" where they sell bottled water, assorted juices/soda, healthy snacks, candy bars and chips. The Culinary team sold "Braddda Pops," a cold iced pop of li hing mui and watermelon flavors made in Hilo and packaged for businesses and schools for fundraising. The Front Office associates made plumeria flower lei, perfect for Royal Luau attendees. Great job teams!
