The Kauai Independent Food Bank was awarded the prize of $2,000 after Chef Rey Montemayor won a Kauai celebrity chef contest on Thursday, August 22, 2013. Representing the Kauai Beach Marriott Resort & Spa, Montemayor was one of five local Kauai chefs competing in the Kauai Coffee Celebrity Chef’s Cookoff for Charity during the opening night at the Kauai County Farm Bureau Fair at Vidinha Stadium.Chef Rey Montemayor

Each of the five chefs competed on behalf of different restaurants and parts of the island of Kauai, and were cooking to win on behalf of their chosen nonprofit organizations. Montemayor received the most votes from diners and judges alike.

Chef Montemayor’s winning dish was a Mauka, Makai Slider, which included Kauai Coffee Rubbed Kaneshiro Roasted Pork with Smokey Chipotle Coffee Barbecue Sauce, Kekaha Shrimp tempura with Spicy Coffee Aioli and Espresso Panna Colla, and a Coffee Jello shooter for dessert. Kauai Beach Marriott Executive Chef Guy Higa helped contribute to the win by dipping Kekaha shrimp for the tempura contribution.

The public was invited to sample the plates of some of Kauai’s top chefs, who utilized Kauai Grown and raised farm ingredients, for a donation of $30. The event was sponsored by Kauai Coffee.

Everyone at Marriott Hawaii and Kauai Beach Marriott are proud of Chef Montemayor for winning the contest, and more importantly, helping the Kauai Independent Food Bank secure additional funding to continue the excellent work that they do for the island.
