Don’t Miss the 7th Annual Fire Knife Competition at Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa

April 13, 2017

Welcome to the 7th Annual “Si’a Le Afi…Ignite the Fire” Maui Fire Knife Competition, presented by Tihati Productions, on April 28 and April 29, 2017 at the Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa.

The fire knife is a traditional Samoan cultural tool that is used in ceremonial dances.

A machete with towels wrapped on both ends was originally used as the implement.

Tribal performers of fire knife dancing (or Siva Afi or even “Ailao Afi” as it is called in Samoa) dance while twirling the knife and doing other amazing stunts.

The towels are set afire during the dances thus explaining the name.

The Samoan fire knife dance is a tradition that has been passed from generation to generation, with each adding a new  styles and skill.
