Moana Lani Spa Partners with Award-Winning Hawaiian Musician to Launch Spa Music Album and Facial

May 8, 2014

natalie ai kamauuMoana Surfrider, A Westin Resort & Spa, the resort that defined the Hawaiian hospitality experience over a century ago, continues to perpetuate Hawaiian culture with the recent partnership with award-winning Hawaiian music artist Natalie Ai Kamauu and Lomi Lomi Kumu LiAnn Aiolani Uyeda.

The inspiration for the partnership is deeply rooted in the Moana Surfrider’s rich history with local music and Hawaiian culture, as Kamauu’s melodic tunes beautifully carry on the traditions of this musical legacy and Uyeda’s expert knowledge in lomi lomi healing embraces traditional Hawaiian healing.

Together with Kamaau and Uyeda, the award-winning Moana Lani Spa has also invited with Rice Force Beauty Products to join the unique partnership to launch a new spa treatment Signature Lomi Facial.

Sharing Moana Surfrider’s romance with music, the three time Na Hoku Hanohano “Female Vocalist of the Year” award winner worked closely with lomi lomi practitioners at Moana Lani Spa to compile a list of 13 special Hawaiian songs selected from seven of her albums that will be used during the spa’s traditional lomi lomi treatments and new signature lomi facial.  Each song was chosen for its musical tempo to help trigger the body’s senses to achieve ultimate relaxation and to coincide with the rhythmic movements of traditional lomi lomi.

Adding a special touch to the new album, Kamauu has also written a special song to capture the charm of “The First Lady of Waikiki” since the historical resort is one of her favorite places to visit in Waikiki.

Continuing to broaden cultural experiences at Moana Surfrider, the new East Meets West custom facial will feature Hawaiian healing components while Kamauu’s album is played during the treatment.  The unique anti-aging Signature Lomi Facial is developed by Lomilomi Kumu LiAnn Uyeda designed to lift and tone various muscles in the neck, eyes, forehead, cheeks and chin by incorporating traditional lomi movements.

With over 18 years of massage experience, Kumu LiAnn has trained and taught each esthetician at Moana Lani Spa to learn distinctive movements and holistic techniques which distinguishes the Signature Lomi Facial to be unique to Hawaii.

In addition to preserving youthful skin through the benefits of natural ingredients in Rice Power Extract, Kumu LiAnn has also trained Moana Lani Spa therapists and estheticians how to restore a client’s mana (energy) by incorporating the art Hawaiian holistic healing by using Ha (breath), oli (chants), and ili ili (warm stones) during the Signature Lomi Facial.  Another Hawaiian healing ingredient used in this customized facial is locally source coconut oil which was used by ancient Polynesians for its healing properties.

Estheticians are taught to rhythmically stroke the organic coconut oil into the client’s skin allowing the oil to slightly warm up in temperature helping to relax the nervous system, facial muscles, and increase circulation.  Coconut oil also helps to open pores in preparation for a following application of locally-sourced honey from Big Island, Hawaii as a way of removing black and white heads.

At the start of the treatment, each guest will be invited to leave their worries at the door of the treatment room.  This is done by placing their troubles into an indigenous wood bowl filled with Alaea salt.  At the end of the day the salt will be thrown into the ocean, allowing the guests’ troubles to be blessed and carried out to sea.  Following the spa’s holistic salt ritual, the rhythmic lomi movement will start to the soothing voice of Kamauu to compliment the indigenous treatment.

After facial muscles are relaxed, Signature Lomi Facial offers guests an opportunity to experience the power of Rice Force skin care products which are scientifically designed to preserve youthful skin by a delicate hydrating system featuring Rice Power Extract.  Rice Power Extract was developed by a sake brewery with a legacy of over 150 years.  The brewery’s craftsmen handled malted rice daily as it is the main ingredient of sake and as years advanced all craftsmen had preserved youthful hands regardless of aging.  Realizing there are benefits in grains of rice, the brewery started a bioscience research program with support from the Japanese government and other medical institutions to discover what the secret ingredient was.

“This is such a rare opportunity for us to share this secret of anti-aging and also incorporate what’s important to us – perpetuating the art of Hawaiian healing and Hawaiian music,” said Director of Moana Lani Spa Travis Kono.  “In my years of spa experience, I have not experienced or seen a treatment as unique to Hawaii as this Signature Lomi Facial and to be able to use a high quality product like Rice Force is truly a marriage made in heaven,” said Kono.

Moana Lani Spa, A Heavenly Spa by Westin™is a full-service spa open daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. located on the second floor of the resort’s Tower Wing.  The 17,000 square-foot oceanfront spa features two couple’s treatment suites with private ocean front lanai and whirlpool tubs; nine custom massage therapy rooms; one body treatment room; a Vichy shower water therapy room; and three custom facial rooms.
